How to Design Good Interior Lighting

Sun has been the best light resources of nature that human being has used get used to the light. And the light effect is more close to that of sun, the more feeling of familiarity our eyes feel. However interior lighting has more secrets.

Interior lighting is not just about lighting the room, but also plays as catalyst to make the whole space have better visual effect, building various art vibe and cosy interior surroundings. Hence, the whole environment feels comfy, relaxing, and safe.

Currently in interior design industry, except special business design or high-end interior design, designers have to spend a lot of time in communicating with the owner, who might be lack of the knowledge of interior design. On the other hand, it is double-challenge for designer to consider design and cost at the same time.

The American architect Louis Kahn says, lighting, is the language that human being speak with God, and is the domain that humanity and godhood embody together. Lighting has the right to express itself and its space.

Hence, lighting is not just for the purpose to show the space, but also as a media to express.

#1 Golden Rule of Interior Lighting Design

There are three ways of interior lighting, concentrated lighting, supplementary lighting, universal lighting. The three ways of lighting are well-connected and cross-over in practical design with the ratio as 5:3:1, which is the golden rule of design.

Golden Rule of Interior Lighting Design
I. Concentrated Lighting

Concentrated lighting refers to accent lighting, the lighting resources is direct lighting to focus on some area, like for reading, working, or cooking.

II.Supplementary Lighting
Concentrated lighting features direct lighting, which means have enough and strong lighting. But if you stay under the light of concentrated lighting for a long time, the body and eyes will feel tired. Hence, the supplementary lighting works to reduce the tiredness caused by direct lighting.

Supplementary lighting is used to relieve the stress caused by concentrated lighting that it makes you feel relaxed and cosy. Supplementary lighting is diffusive and indirect lighting that it will not project into eyes directly, or has soft lighting and will not cause damage to eyes.

III.Universal Lighting
Universal lighting usually refers to the main light, also called universal lighting. Universal lighting will light up the room to some extent with even spreading of light. Because it usually comes with other types of lighting that usually its level of lighting is lower than other lighting.

#2 How to Design Interior Lighting

There are four factors to tell how to design a proper interior lighting, angle, color temperature, color rendering index, the degree of dazzle.

All designs are worked for human beings, as well as design of lighting. For the color, brightness, and location should be well planed before final call. The core of interior lighting is to build different vibes for the room, to make the living space cosy, relaxing, and safe. Hence, improve spiritual experience through the connection between lighting and space.

Prevent from Myopia
It is proved that natural lighting prevents from myopia. From the perspective of protecting eyes, choosing lamps with high index is good for eyes, especially for kids. If choose low index lighting, the lights reflect into kids’ eyes will have less saturation, resulting in cross-color and eye fatigue. Finally it will lead to myopia.

Generally speaking, places required color comparison need to have high color rendering index more than 90. Whilst places requested color correction need to have color rendering index from 80-89. Places for medium color rendering need color rendering index from 60-79.

#3 Anti-dazzle Process of Interior Lighting

With the view, if there are lights too strong or change too much, it will make the eyes uncomfortable and dizzy. Dazzle is one of the main reasons cause eyes fatigue.

Early back in 1995, CIE has introduced the theory of anti-dazzle lamps, and uses UGR(Unified Glare Rating) as the index to judge whether interior lighting is comfortable or not. With the development of LED light, more and more LED lights come into being. The brighter the LED light, the more uncomfortable the eyes feel. Hence in 2014, EU has set UGR as the forced standard to produce and sale lights, but not just working as reference.
